Day 1

Guests of this tour will be picked up from their hotels in Salvador. Please see "Departure and Return" for more detailed information regarding pickup and drop-off times and location. Our tour of the city will begin at the Dique do Tororo, where we will see images of Afro-Brazilian orixas, and then the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova. We will then proceed to the Lower City, stopping at the famous Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim. At Forte de Mont Serrat, we will see a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. Our tour will end with a visit to the Lacerda Elevator and the Mercado Modelo craft market. Afterwards, guests will be returned to their hotels.

Salvador, BRAZIL

Salvador is the capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia. With 2.9 million people, it is the largest city proper in the Northeast Region and the 4th-largest city proper in the country.

Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim

The most famous church in the city of Salvador, it was designed in the baroque style, albeit with a more modest, simplistic approach. Each year, it hosts the Festa do Bonfim, which mixes Catholic and African themes and practices.

Dique do Tororo

This dike in Salvador was once the center of the city's defensive fortifications. There is a pond in the middle, in which there are statues of traditional Afro-Brazilian deities known as orixas.

Forte de Mont Serrat

This defensive facility sits at a strategic point to guard the inner harbor of Salvador. Completed in the mid-18th century, its walls are a chalk-white, organized in a hexagonal pattern with six towers that resemble salt-shakers.

Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova

This state-of-the-art soccer stadium was completed in 2013, first used for that years Confederations Cup, and ultimately for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It has a maximum capacity of 55,000 spectators, and will be used for the 2016 Olympics.

Lacerda Elevator

Connecting the old city of Salvador with the new, this incredible art deco building dates back to the early 1600s, when the local Jesuits built a rope-and-pulley system to convey people from the port to the settlement above.

Mercado Modelo

A traditional craft market of Brazil, this building is the place to go to find local arts and handmade goods that exemplify the local culture of the city and the Bahia region.

Departure & return

Free hotel pick up is available from all major Salvador at 1:00pm (aprox.). Please put your hotel name in the "Hotel Info" area when booking. Exact Pick up time and location will confirm later.
