Day 1 Jokulsarlon

After selecting the best time for their schedule, guests will meet up with their tour guides at the café in Jokulsarlon, located next to the world-renowned glacial lagoon in Skaftafell Nature Reserve. Their excursion will begin with a drive and then walk to the local ice caves, all while learning about the Vatnajokull ice cap from the guide. The particular cave they visit will be decided by the guide, who will use their knowledge of local weather patterns to determine which is safest on the day of the journey.

A large glacial lake in southeast Iceland, on the edge of Vatnajokull National Park. Situated at the head of the Breioamerkurjokull glacier, it developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Always Visit
Ice caves such as the one you will be exploring are rare and natural phenomena that have formed over extended periods of time. After the meltwater of spring begins to freeze each fall, locals of the area start their annual ice cave hunt, which is why the exact location of the caves changes each year.
