Description

Montserrat mountain is special for its rocks shape that remind of a human and animal appearance.
The Basilica de Montserrat holds the Montserrat Virgin, known as La Moreneta (the Black Virgin), which is the patron saint of Catalonia.
Visit the Cardona castle a modern fortress and parts of the old Castle of Cardona.
The Mountain of Sal of Cardona grows every year, occupying a depression of the terrain with elongated ellipse shape with an area of 1,800m long.

Day 1

We will begin our day driving out of Barcelona towards Cardona. Once we arrive, we will see the famous salt mountain that grows larger in diameter every year. Then, we will continue to Cardona Castle, where a modern fortress was built on the site of an older castle, blending distinct architectural styles. We will explore the interior of this amazing castle and learn about the history of the Dukes of Cardona, the "crownless kings." Afterwards, we will enjoy brunch before traveling to the mountain of Montserrat. To get to the top of the mountain, we will take a cog-wheel train, which brings us to the magnificent Royal Basilica at the summit. This building contains a famous 12th century Romanesque carving of the Black Madonna. The site has attracted pilgrims since its foundation in 1025. We will be able to enjoy a detailed audio-visual exhibition about the history and creation of Montserrat. Afterwards, we will take a short walk to the hermitage of Saint Benet. If we are fortunate, we will have the chance to hear them perform. Early in the afternoon, our guide will take us on an exclusive visit to the Sacristy built by the architect Fracesc Folguera. To end the day, we will find a nice spot outside to enjoy brunch and enjoy a little free time before returning to Barcelona.

Cardona Castle

This medieval Catalan fortress sits on a hill overlooking the town of Cardona. Built in 886 by William the Hairy, it mixes the Romanesque and Gothic styles of medieval architecture.

Montserrat

A very short trip outside of Barcelona will bring visitors to Montserrat, a mountain nearby the city. Perfect hiking trails wind their way over the broad mountain. A beautiful Benedictine Abbey was built amongst these peaks.
